Chapter 12

Most of the women that had retired to bed fell asleep almost straight away. The strain of the disappearance of Mr Taylor and Mr Cooper had not only been hard on Miss Wessex and Mrs Cooper. Most of the young women seemed to be distressed that Harry was missing rather than Daniel.

Though Daniel was a handsome young man, his mother ensured that nearly every woman was kept her away from her son.

Harry’s parents had allowed him much more freedom, and he had taken full advantage of that freedom. Sarah sat in the billiard room and listened to Wilbraham, Edward and Thomas talking about how Mr Taylor spent most of his time touring the country, visiting with different families and attending some of the finest parties that society had to offer.

Mr Cooper, on the other hand, was kept very close to home and only attended social events that his mother was also going to.

It was almost one o’clock in the morning when they finished talking and were retiring to bed when there was an unexpected knock at the door. Bosworth answered it to find Miss Baker in the company of Henry Cartwright.

“Bosworth, where is Constable Evans?” Miss Baker asked in a terrified voice.

"I'll fetch him for you, Miss Baker, please sit in the parlour. Can I fetch you a drink? You look most unwell," Bosworth said with concern.

"Bring her some water please, Bosworth," Mr Cartwright said as he gently led Miss Baker towards the parlour.

“What’s going on, Bosworth?” Sarah asked as she stood on the stairs with a frown on her face.

"Miss Baker and Mr Cartwright are here looking for Constable Evans," Bosworth replied.

“I’ll fetch the constable, where are they?” Sarah said

"In the parlour," Bosworth replied and went to fetch some water for Miss Baker. Constable Evans hadn't gone to bed; instead, he'd gone to talk to Mr Hunter. The doctor had chosen to remain and listen to the questions Constable Evans was asking, and to make sure that Mr Hunter stayed in bed.

The doctor felt it was best to go and check on Miss Baker. When Lady Sarah, Constable Evans and Doctor Hales entered the parlour, the brigadier was there with Bosworth.

The butler had decided to fetch his master, as there should be nothing that happened under George’s roof that he didn’t know about. Miss Baker and Mr Cartwright were sat on one of the long sofas. Mr Cartwright was holding Miss Baker’s hand. She was pale and shaking slightly, but she had managed to maintain her composure despite this.

The doctor quickly examined her and determined that other than suffering from a nasty shock, she was quite well.

“Miss Baker, what is the matter?” Constable Evans asked with a frown as he entered the parlour with Lady Sarah and Doctor Hales.

"Constable Evans, I have come to report a robbery," Miss Baker took a deep breath before she spoke. She managed to keep her voice even as she talked, but she was shaking more visibly by the time she had finished.

Mr Cartwright patted her hand reassuringly, and she flashed him a grateful smile.
